What it is?

Subter is the app for secure communications. Using modern cryptography in conjunction with steganography Subter allows you to send messages to you recipients in plain sight.

Subter lets you send messages inside of your social media posts that only your friends can see. It allows you to operate securely on top of your existing social networks and not have to worry that your information is being mined, exploited, and mishandled.

Why Subter?

Social Networking, with its alluring offering of connecting you with your friends and family, mines and harvests every piece of information you share on their platform. Every interaction, every like, every view and click you make, the content and sentiment of the posts you share; all are analyzed, scrutinized, and cataloged for future use by the platforms. This sort of broad and deep tracking, combined with the information that is willingly posted into social networking platforms, allows Big Tech to use your identity and your information like digital oil. You, and your information, are not a digital commodity to be sold.

In addition to this invasion of privacy, it's been shown time and time again that corporations, large and small, do not do enough to protect their users' data. The list of data breaches we've all been subjected to is innumerable. And there's no repercussions to these breeches to prompt businesses to handle our data with care.

A solution is needed so that we can still participate online and preserve our privacy and security. A solution that doesn't force us to run off to some other no-mans-land to be safe. Subter fills this very critical need for secure means of public communication.

Who is it For?

Subter is for everyone but it's especially for those who are concerned about privacy. Today, on the Internet, we're constantly under surveillance. Data collecting trackers are prevalent on every website you visit and implicit in all the social networks you participate in. According to a study by Ghostery:

... trackers that collect data on internet users' online behavior are present on at least 79 percent of websites (unique domains) globally. Web tracking has become so pervasive that approximately ten percent of websites send the data they've collected to ten or more different companies (unique tracker domains). In terms of web traffic, 15 percent of all page loads on the internet are monitored by ten or more trackers. According to the study, tracking scripts from Google (60.3 percent of page loads) and Facebook (27.1 percent) are the most prevalent.

You could always just turn it off. You could exclude yourself their game and opt out. "But everyone I know is there!" and "I'll have to convince everyone to join me over on that other network in order to be secure" are common responses to opting out. And those are valid points. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to use a social network. They do provide value to their users. You've spent time connecting with people on these networks. You coordinate events and share information on these networks. How then, can you be both social and secure at the same time?

Subter is the answer to this problem. Subter allows you to leverage your existing social connections while simultaneously allowing you to communicate securely. Subter leverages your social connections and creates a channel for communications on top of the platforms you like to utilize.

How it Works?

Subter works by encrypting your data before you send it to your recipient and then hiding that secret message inside of an image. This image can then be shared safely on your social networks, or elsewhere, to your recipient. In this way, you don't have to leave your network of connections behind as when you use a new app. You don't have to abandon all your connections in order to safely communicate as you would with other secure communications applications and you can still participate on those platforms.

Subter also does not intermediate your messages like many platforms do. Your messages are encrypted on your device with your own set of cryptographic keys. The Subter service never handles your private keys and they remain on your device.

Data Privacy

Data privacy is not something that most people think about in their day to day lives. However, data privacy is increasingly important in today's hyper-connected, online and offline world. We tend to compartmentalize the things we do online and don't think that what happens there has a direct impact on what happens offline.

This is not the case though. Our digital lives have become intrinsically linked to our physical lives through the usage of trackers, profiling, and data brokers. It used to be said that "on the internet, no one knows you're a dog". Now, it's not only known that you're a dog but what breed, what snacks you like, and how often you find that tennis ball. There are now innumerable examples of how we're being tracked across mediums and how that's actually impacting our daily lives.

It's time we started to change this and defend ourselves from those that would treat our information as digital oil to pump. Much like all the other protections we put in place from locks on the doors, to wearing seat belts, to carrying insurance; We need to establish protections that we don't have to think about so that we can continue to enjoy our lives.

But change is always hard and no one likes to learn entirely new things just to get the same results. That's why Subter offers the best of both worlds. A small, yet incremental change in how we communicate that will have longer lasting effects that protect us. If we could opt out our private information while still opting in to the network and its features, isn't that ideal?
